Dr. David Shibles Retires

Dr. Shibles has been the Polk County Urban Horticulturist and Master Gardener Coordinator for the past 15 years. He is retiring as of June 19, 2015. When Dr. Shibles inherited a Master Gardener origination there were of only two  Master Gardeners. In the last 15 years, he built the program to where it has a formal organization, meets regularly, and has over 100 members. Dr. Shibles has been committed to helping the Polk County community by providing the latest scientifically based horticultural information possible to gardening issues. He has insisted that the Master Gardeners do the same.  His concern and kindness for individuals and the community cannot be overstated. He will be missed. We hope and expect him to have a happy retirement.

Master Gardener Fall Plant Plant Sale

The Polk County Master Gardeners will hold a plant sale on Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The sale will take place at the City of Lakeland Nursery at 4620 US Highway 98 S in Lakeland.  Please use the entrance to Oak Hill Burial Park. Plants available will be Florida-Friendly, Florida Natives, Ornamentals, Groundcovers, Butterfly attracting, Grass and Grass-like, Shade loves and much more.  Plants will be priced to go.  A flyer about the event can be found here. Backyard Garden Fest  and Plant Sale

The 2015, the 9th annual, Backyard Garden Fest and Plant Sale was held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  We had a lovely day for a plant festival.  It was a wonderful time.  Everyone seemed to be happy and enjoying themselves.  A lot of folks found some really nice plants.  Unfortunately, we underestimated the demand for peach trees and so ran out before everyone desiring to get one could.  Thanks everyone who came.

Master Gardener Training

I am sorry to announce that the 2015 Master Gardener class has been canceled. due to Dr. Shibles retirement.

The Master Gardener program is designed to train volunteers to help the Polk County Urban Environmental Horticulturist with his programs. After training is completed in December, you will be expected to contribute volunteer hours over the next year and to continue your education. If you are interested in learning more about theMaster Gardeners, or becomming one please follow this link. Cost is expected to be around $140.  This cost will pay for books, teaching supplies, and a Master Gardener shirt when you complete the class successfully.
