World Wetlands Day at Bok Tower Gardens

Join us on World Wetlands Day and learn how wetlands provide flood control and drought resistance as well as critical wildlife habitat.

More Backyard Bees

Program presented by Bonnie Sprague and Ray Duchesneau.  Bonnie and Ray are Lake Alfred residents and backyard beekeepers who will share how they began their adventure with bees and what they learned along the way. The benefits of bees go far beyond honey production, to increased pollination and more! The first Thursday of every month at 10:00 a.m. come and enjoy FREE gardening workshops, sponsored by Florida Master Gardeners and the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the city of Lake Alfred, Parks and Recreation. Color in the Garden

In this workshop you will learn how to use color in the landscape.  Color combinations, color theory and using color to organize your landscape will be discussed.  This workshop is free. Lunch is provided and registration is required. Register here.

Join the Polk County Master Gardeners for a guided tour around the Florida-Friendly Demonstration Garden at the UF/IFAS Extension Service in Bartow.  The gardens are installed, designed and maintained by the Polk County Master Gardeners following the nine principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping.
The tour will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Paul Anderson Gazebo on the south side of the Extension building (between the Stuart Center and the Extension building).  Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.  Plant lists are provided, but a clipboard and a pen can be helpful.  

You must register for the tour.  If you need to cancel last minute, please email Paul Anderson at jiandr@aol.com. We will not hold the tour if there are no registrations.

A Virtual Walk Through Mackay Gardens and Lakeside Preserve

Presented by Steve Franklin. If you haven’t been, or are physically unable to enjoy one of Steve’s walking tours at Mackay, this is your chance to sit back, relax and take an “armchair tour.” Steve uses his love of nature, people and his talent for poetry to bring us a new understanding of the history behind this beautiful piece of Lake Alfred, Florida. Information regarding actual walking tours will be available, as well. Night Hike at Bok Tower Gardens
Friday, April 22, 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Bok Tower Gardens, 1151 Tower Blvd., Lake Wales
$5 per participant. Adults & children ages 10 and up. Reservations required, maximum 25.  Call (863) 676-1408.
Unravel the mysteries of nighttime sights and sounds as you discover the Gardens after the sun goes down. Watch for nocturnal animals, the glow of spider eyes and more while listening to the creatures of the night. We will be hiking without flashlights but don't worry; we'll have the moon to guide us. This tour is appropriate for all levels of hiking experience but participants should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain. Please bring any medical emergency supplies that may be needed on an outdoor adventure, such as Epi-pens, with you.
Closed-toe shoes are required and sneakers or light hiking boots are recommended. Please dress with the weather in mind, the entire event takes place outdoors.
